The Futures Bright

May 18, 2009

A recent resurgence in the popularity of orangeries can provide your home with a stylish new way to add space for living, working and relaxing.

If you're after an extra room in your house without the hassle of moving, an orangery can fit the bill perfectly, offering privacy and a stylish addition to your property.

Originally fashionable in the 17th century among aristocratic families to house exotic and rare plants, orangeries soon became a 'must have' addition to any stately home as an expression of wealth and status.

Today, many homeowners are considering orangeries due to the greater privacy offered because of the brick and timber structure and less use of glass than a traditional conservatory. Another advantage of an orangery is its ability to blend with existing architecture makes approval more likely.

So what is the benefit of having an orangery? As well as offering an enhanced quality of lifestyle by creating an extra room that can be used all year round, it will offer a great deal of privacy from neighbours and architecturally it will complement traditional house styles more effectively than other extensions. Its thermal efficiency is very effective, particularly on north-facing sites.

Today's resurgence of interest in orangeries is due in part to a new wave of technology such as solar control and self cleaning glass, under floor heating, super thermally efficient windows and roofing materials; not to mention modern building techniques. The invention of new technology makes it possible to recreate the elegant and stylish look of a traditional orangery while being easier to maintain and less expensive to heat.

Think about including hallmark large pilasters, picture windows and tall doors to give a stylish building with timeless good looks and a seamless link between the house and garden.

Due to their glazed roofs, orangeries can provide wonderfully light and airy spaces and can offer a glamorous extra room for entertaining. Choose from a variety of styles, from modern to traditional to match the style of your home and fulfil your requirements.

Seek advice from experts who can turn your vision into a reality, taking care of every aspect of the construction of your orangery, from design and planning, electrical work and heating, right through to completion of the project.
As well as adding an extra room to your home, an orangery is a stylish and elegant way to add more space and flexibility to your home, while adding significant value to your home.

Tradeplas and the enviroment

Trade Plas – Committed to a sustainable future

There was a time when choosing replacement windows was a fairly simple exercise. If the windows looked good, kept out the cold and were within budget that was about all you had to worry about. But in these eco-friendly times there are other things to consider.
When the UK signed up to the Kyoto protocol in 1997 there were huge implications on the window industry. In particular, the introduction of Approved document L1A (conservation of fuel and power) meant that windows had to meet stringent energy conservation levels so as to help reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
It is fair to say that most energy savings are achieved through the use of special glass coatings (something Tradeplas fit as standard). However, a detrimental impact on the environment can also be reduced by careful choice of the window frames.
Tradeplas offer three choices of window frame:

* Aluminium
Not only is aluminium the most abundant metallic element on earth, with deposits calculated to last for 300 years, but also recycling could extend that life for another 300 years at least. The reality of this can be seen in one example: the recycling of 96% of the aluminium removed from the old Wembley football stadium prior to its rebuilding. When an aluminium window finishes its natural life it can be broken down and recycled.

* PVCu
The recyclability of PVCu is regularly questioned. There is a misconception that PVCu cannot be recycled. Contrary to this, process waste from PVCu window extrusions and fabrication has been reincluded into products for as long as the process has existed. Almost 100% of the mass of the raw material PVCu can end up as a useful product. It is estimated that PVCu can be recycled four times without significant degradation, giving a product a persistence of well over 140yrs, assuming a product life span of 35yrs, which has been confirmed by a recent BRE study. (British Research and Consultancy)

* Timber
Timber is a sustainable resource - as long as the timber is sourced from properly managed forests. If care is taken in the choice of preservative, paint and stains, timber windows are one of the best environment choices. Developments in timber window design and finishing products mean that modern, high performance timber windows need minimal maintenance and potentially have at least as long a lifespan as any other material.

Each product has a strong enviromental argument and the choice is yours. So when it is time to think about replacing your windows or doors, remember to visit the Trade Plas showroom in Nailsworth and talk to a sales advisor who will assist you in making an informed choice.

Move or improve?

July 17, 2008

Not ready to move? - why not improve?

We all know about the economic downturn. You can hardly switch on the TV or read a newspaper without being reminded - its not all doom and gloom however, in these uncertain times many homeowners are opting to stay put and improve their homes rather than move, and with this in mind consumer finance service GE money has worked out which home improvements have potential to add the most value to your home.
Coming in at no 3 (behind an extension and a loft conversion) is adding a conservatory, with a massive 6.7% value added to your home - their can be few additions to your home that add so much value yet causes so little disruption whilst being built.
Benefits of adding a conservatory to your home.
* The Conservatory gives you more living space. Adding a conservatory to your home will increase size of one of your down stairs rooms, so if you are looking for a cost effective way of extending your home with minimal fuss a Conservatory is worth serious consideration.
* Although it may sound costly a conservatory could actually be cheaper than moving home into a bigger property. Remember that the costs associated with moving house could easily be more than £15,000 especially if you were to include stamp duty payable. This makes adding a conservatory a very viable option.
* You can get an amazing ambient light quality in a conservatory. There is nothing like natural sunlight to improve your mood. With the large percentage of glass in a conservatory build you get plenty of light.
* Modern building techniques and the latest glass technology make a conservatory a “four season” room.
* A conservatory provides a smoother transition from your living or dining room into the garden. It brings the garden into the house especially if combined with a complementary patio area.
* They can be very cozy and relaxing, especially on a wet and windy day. Some people love the sound of rain on the roof
* What a great dining room a conservatory makes - light, great views and a wonderful ambience in the evening.

Even when you decide the time is right to move a conservatory can help, as a conservatory makes a home more desirable and ultimately more sellable.

There can be no doubt that with careful planning and informed choices your conservatory will provide you with a beautiful building that will provides your family with many years of pleasure, and an addition that adds real value to your home.

At TradePlas we understand that your conservatory is a major purchase and one that will have a profound influence on your home and lifestyle. Our sales people are experienced professionals who listen to you. So you can rest assured that your conservatory will be engineered with enduring strength and beauty.
